But living the freelance life can be very difficult. And for some people, it’s next to impossible to maintain a healthy and balanced life while also making their own hours and being 100% responsible for how much money they make.
But there are plenty of tips and tricks you can apply to your life if you’re self-employed yourself and looking for a little more balance. They’re all fairly simple, too! They’re just things we don’t think about often enough. Take it from me, they really work!
SAY “NO” MORE OFTEN
When you’re self-employed and every job you work is on a freelance basis, it’s hard to not take every single opportunity that comes your way. When your income is never consistent or guaranteed, it just makes sense to take every paying job you can. But, in some cases, this can be seriously affecting your life in a negative way.
Because not all freelance jobs are created equal. There are certainly some that will take advantage of or, at the very least, will not appropriate put your skills to good use. So start practicing saying “no” more often! Other jobs will come along. You should never take a job just because you think you have to. Your daily mood will thank you!
LEAVE TIME FOR YOURSELF
Freelancers don’t have the privilege of regular work hours. You can, and will, work all hours of the day and week. And often times, this leads to not taking enough time for yourself. Which can be very unhealthy. Your body needs to rest! And you will always deserve a little fun in your life.
So make sure to schedule some time in your week to relax and do something for you. In whatever way that means. Binge a TV show, take a little day trip somewhere, anything. But leave the laptop and cell phone behind! This time is just about you. And you deserve it.
CREATE A ROUTINE AND STICK TO IT
As we just mentioned, freelancers will never have a consistent schedule. But that doesn’t mean they still can’t benefit from a daily routine. Routines can help you stay focused and reduce stress. It doesn’t matter if the work itself is always changing. You can still eat meals at the same time or do 20 minutes of exercise in the morning. Little things like that, done the same way and at the same time every day, can do wonders for your mental and emotional health.
JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE WORKING FROM HOME DOESN’T MEAN YOU GET TO BE A SLOB
Often times, self-employment also involves working from home. And all too often this means writing on the laptop on the couch in your sweatpants! But, similar to the lack of a routine as discussed above, this can really lead to poor work output and even depression.
So actually taking a shower and getting dressed in the morning, even if “going to work” just means sitting at the desk in your room, can make all the difference. Come on now, you know it’s not that hard. Just add it to your newly developed daily routine!
SAVE TIME FOR EXERCISE
As freelancers, it feels like we never stop being busy. We’re always going from job to job and we’re just barely finding time in the day to buy food or do our laundry. So trying to exercise regularly feels downright impossible. But I promise you it isn’t! A healthy and effective daily exercise routine only has to take about 20 or 30 minutes. You can spare 20 minutes!
And the obvious physical health benefits from regular exercise are, well, obvious! Of course being healthier will make you feel better. So you know what to do: add it to your routine!
