Sorry CrossFit, you’ve been replaced… by crawling, yea, I said, crawling. As years go by, trends come and go, and they just keep getting stranger. 2017 is here and we are ready to say goodbye to last year’s fitness trends and say “Hello,” to the new ones. The holidays have come and gone and if you are like me, then unhealthy binging has revenged your body. Why else would the most common New Year’s resolution be, “hit the gym?”
American’s tend to overindulge during the holidays so; January and February are always filled with new fitness fads and trends to help us lose the excess weight.

Crawling
Let’s get on our hands and knees and crawl around like babies. Unfortunately, I’m not kidding, this is the hottest trend for 2017. It’s being referred to as, “the new Planking,” which doesn’t inspire me much. Crawling will help strengthen your core while easing many people’s bad backs, maybe this trend will stick around, or maybe it’ll begin to walk, eventually.
Slacklining
We’ve all seen a group of millennial hipsters tightrope walking in a park, and if you haven’t, prepare for it. Slacklining is a hot trend inspired by daredevil tightrope walkers and circus performers. Slacklining however, uses a, you got it, loose line instead of a taut one. This exercise uses every muscle in the body to balance on the rope and is picking up steam across America. Expect to see slacklining equipment show up in big box retailers soon.
Wearable fitness tech
This is not a new trend per say but a strengthening trend, with no end in sight. The future is here and has been here since Fitbits came on the scene. The technology is only getting better and the increasing data is helping make fitness much more personal and focused. We expect virtual reality technology to be intertwined with wearable technology very soon.
Dance class
Dance classes are nothing new, but these new, pop influenced versions are exciting. Think twerk classes and exotic dancing just to mention two. These will be popping up in strip malls all across America, very soon. A great cardio workout that is easily reproduced all over. I expect dance classes to be huge in 2017.
Aerobics
Jane Fonda isn’t releasing any new videos, but that doesn’t mean Aerobics isn’t coming back. The 80’s always seem to be back in fashion, so why not throw on some retro leotards and leg warmers and get your aerobics on. These workouts increase coordination and endurance all while being fun for the participant. Retro classes that only play 80’s music are popping up along with other fun themed classes.
Sleep
Rest is becoming a lost art, but 2017 will change all that. With the recent resurgence in yoga and meditation, sleep was next in line. We don’t rest enough between workouts and it’s making us not recover enough. This constant struggle is hurting us more and more, so doctors are advocating sleep. Expect to see deprivation chambers and float sessions go on a major rise in 2017. Rest is finally back and I haven’t been behind a fitness trend more.
