There’s a new drink at the Iberian Rooster restaurant in St. Petersburg, Florida, and it’s called an “Angel Shot.” What’s in it: A safe journey home. The restaurant recently put a sign in the women’s bathroom, encouraging women who are on a bad Tinder date or any date that’s making them “feel unsafe” to head up to the bar and order an Angel Shot. The drink order is code to the bartender that you need assistance getting home safely. Order the drink neat, and the bartender will escort you to your car. Order it on ice, and they’ll call a Lyft or Uber for you. And order it with lime, and the bartender will call the police. The restaurant owner, Russell Andrade, told the Tampa Bay Times that he put up the sign to ensure that women can feel safe at the Iberian Rooster.
“The goal for this place was to be a safe place where people can go on a romantic date,” Andrade told the newspaper. “We don’t want someone else to ruin a good a time.”The Iberian Rooster is one of many restaurants that have recently placed signs like this in women’s bathrooms. A British restaurant went viral in April after it posted a sign telling women to ask for “Rachelle or Jennifer”” at the bar if they needed a safe escape. And another British restaurant followed suit in November with a sign telling women to “Ask for Angela” if they needed assistance.Andrade said the viral “Ask for Angela” poster inspired him to create the “Angel Shot” sign. It’s such a good idea—let’s hope more restaurants follow suit!
