All Of The Times The Simpsons Predicted The Future Surprisingly

If you have watched television at all anytime in the last 30 years you more than likely have seen an episode of “The Simpsons”. The beloved animated comedy about a dysfunctional working middle-class family and the town they live in. It has been on the air for exactly 30 years and is now the longest running American scripted primetime television series.

The recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney has led to speculation about the future of the show, though the 31st and 32nd seasons have already been confirmed. One disturbing thing has also been brought to light and that is the fact that The Simpsons predicted this move by the entertainment giant way back in 1998. We did some digging and it turns out The Simpsons have predicted quite a lot of things before they happened. The writers are either cultural connoisseurs, geniuses, from the future or all of the above. Take a look at these coincidences with the show and reality and decide for yourself.

5 Fun Lessons to Teach Leadership in the Classroom

Published

on

By

Primary School Lesson

Leadership is more than just a single action or way of thinking. Being a good leader requires mastering a collection of concepts and skills, including communication, delegation, listening, and more. Instead of teaching students leadership as a whole (which can be especially confusing for younger students), focus on teaching them the individual skills that combine to create great leaders. Teaching these skills through active, hands-on activities and games paired with rewards and prizes is the best way to keep students engaged, interested, and ready to learn more! In this post, we’ll go over five fun lessons for teaching leadership in the classroom, plus a bonus everyday lesson tip at the end! These lessons are great for students of all ages and can be tweaked for all ability levels.

  1. Class Government

Class government is a great way to help students build leadership skills because it’s a dynamic lesson that can be worked on throughout the school year. Assign students class government roles like President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and citizens. Clearly explain what each of the roles entails, then assign tasks for the class government to handle. The president must communicate and collaborate with the other government members to figure out the best solution for the task, delegate subtasks to different government members or citizens, and ensure the subtasks are completed and documented. Citizens can also raise concerns which government members then have to sort out. Rotate government members out throughout the year so that all students have a chance to be in at least one government role, or take the activity to the next level and have students run mini-campaigns and elections!

Class government teaches students communication, collaboration, critical thinking, delegation, problem solving, decision making, team building, conflict resolution, decisiveness, active listening, empathy, integrity, and responsibility.

  1. Group Scavenger Hunt

Nothing brings a group of people together like working toward a common goal, and a group scavenger hunt is the perfect way to make this lesson in teamwork and communication fun and rewarding! This is a lesson that can be adjusted for use multiple times throughout the school year, with themes focusing on holidays, seasons, or any type of special time or occasion. Split students into small group of 3-5, explain the scavenger hunt rules and scoring, then unleash the students into the designated hunt area and watch their leadership skills grow!

Group scavenger hunt teaches students communication, collaboration, feedback, problem solving, decision making, team building, decisiveness, active listening, time management, and critical thinking.

  1. Crossed Wires Telephone Game

We’d all like to think that we’re great listeners, but are we really? This fun active listening game aims to show students just how easy it is for miscommunications to happen when we’re not fully listening. To begin, line the students up in a long row. Whisper a “message” into the first student’s ear, then have that student whisper the same message to the second student, and so on. See if the students can relay the correct message all the way to the last student in line, but get ready for some hilarious misinterpretations along the way! Discuss with students how these types of miscommunications can derail a leader’s efforts, then teach different ways to prevent them.

Crossed Wires Telephone Game teaches active listening, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

  1. Bucket List

Every good leader has strong yet reasonable goals in place, so teaching goal setting is a great way to boost a student’s leadership skills. Creating a bucket list is a fun activity to do at the beginning of the school year, then check back in for progress throughout the year. Discuss with students the importance of setting goals that are neither too easy or too hard, and focus on helping them set goals that they can reasonably achieve before the school year ends. Celebrate their achievements during periodic check-ins. If students are struggling to make progress on their goals, teach them how to identify the problem and adjust their goals accordingly. Setting class-wide bucket list goals at the beginning of the year is also a great way to teach goal setting and collaboration throughout the year. Reward students for achieving class-wide bucket list goals with prizes or a class party!

Creating a bucket list teaches students goal setting, communication, critical thinking, time management, motivation, collaboration, and decision making.

  1. Blind Obstacle Course

All leaders eventually face adversity, so teaching students to deal with unexpected difficult situations is a great leadership building activity. Set up an obstacle course that is appropriate for the age level of the students, keeping safety in mind at all times. Split the students into small groups of 3-5 and have each group pick numbers to decide who goes first, second, third, and so on. Blindfold the first person and have the other group members navigate them through the obstacle course…but there’s another twist…there are no negative words allowed! Provide the students with a list of prohibited “negative” words that they are not allowed to use while helping their blindfolded classmate. Negative behaviors such as yelling should also be disallowed. Students will be surprised at how difficult it can be to help someone through a stressful, unknown situation without reverting to negativity, but with a little practice they’ll pick up positivity in no time.

Blind obstacle course teaches students positivity, communication, team building, collaboration, active listening, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and flexibility.

Bonus: Everyday Leadership Lesson

One of the best leadership lessons students can receive is through teaching by example. When teachers exhibit the behaviors of good leaders in the classroom and students see the rewards and success that come along with those behaviors, the students will naturally begin to mimic those same behaviors. This is a lesson that can be taught every minute of every school day, constantly building and reinforcing leadership skills.
