Food For Thought: Pizza For Breakfast Can Be Healthier Than Cereal

A typical American hotel breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausage, bread with jam and butter, pancakes with syrup, cereal, hash browns, and a variety of beverages including coffee, tea, juice, and milk. However, the typical American that actually participates in the most important meal of the day probably only has a bowl of cereal or oatmeal and a cup of coffee or milk. If they’re especially “healthy,” a piece of lone fruit may be added to the mix. Nonetheless, many of us are lacking or choosing the wrong foods that are typically associated with the first and important meal of the day.

 

      For those unaware, partaking in the A.M. based meal offers several benefits for normal bodily function throughout the day. Many studies agree that enjoying breakfast can lower overall BMI, prevents you consuming excess fat throughout the day, helps reach daily recommended intake of fruit and vegetable, taking in a higher amount of fiber and calcium, and generally have a better performing mental state when it comes to memory and attention. In addition, skipping the meal has been observed to lead an increased chance in consuming unhealthy snacks, a greater chance of being overweight, and less likely to achieve proper fruit and vegetable consumption.

 

Sugar

     All that being said, alluding to our title, you’re probably still wondering how a slice of pizza can be healthier than a bowl of cereal for breakfast… or at any point during the day. Well, we’ll have to take this thought from New York-based nutritionist, Chelsey Amer. She starts with a focus on the sugar content of cereal. Even going back to 2014-findings, childhood (aka, everyone) cereals contain more than 2 two and a half teaspoons per serving. For over 40 popular cereal brands, a single serving of these sugary cereals even exceeds 60% of the daily recommended intake. Worse yet, since servings suggested by boxes is so incredibly small, children and adults both consume several servings of sugar overload in one sitting. Even eating one serving per day would lead to nearly 1,000 total teaspoons of sugar consumption per year. Sugar accelerates aging, tooth decay, immune system suppression, and increased risks for obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

      More so, a bowl of cereal has a “nutritionally bleak” standing as it lacks any real protein and healthy fats. “You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories… However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning” said Amer.

 

“Health”

     “Healthy” may be the incorrect word to express the overall nutritional value of pizza compared to cereal, but that slice of pizza may definitely be healthier. Amer does admit “a slice of pizza contains more fat and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash.” Cynthia Sass MPH and RD also states that “A cereal made with whole grains, nuts or seeds, and fruit with organic grass-fed milk or plant-based milk is a better choice over a grease-laden pizza made with processed meat like pepperoni on a white flour crust.”

      All in all, pizza is “generally” healthier than a bowl of cereal. Always? No. Most likely? Yes. It ultimately depends on the health-consciousness of the pizza and cereal choice, but from a distance, it seems that pizza is actually healthier than a bowl of cereal. Who would have thought that?

Alan believes that he has “found his soul mate during the most unlikely of times”. They are hoping to get married in Vegas as soon as the chapels open there.

While this sounds like a perfect, if not improbable, reality for all, dating sites have become even more popular as more and more single people hope to find someone to be with online. Experts assert that the current pandemic has actually made it even more convenient for singles to find possible matches.

“Because we have this dedicated time to find love, there are no distractions — you’re not a bar looking at people around you or looking at your drink. Everyone’s more present and they are more conscious about the way they are showing up to these virtual or real-life dates,” shares Yue Xu, co-host of the ‘Dateable’ podcast.

The language of wine can be romantic, mystifying, or nonsensical — sometimes all at once. Experts share their experience and research for some wines and winery in answering the question: “What makes a wine food-friendly?”. Some people are dependent on wine names and might seem self-evident, but frequently, they get deceived. 

“Food-friendly” is a common description that should seem obvious, but what does it mean?

Most people would say that wine is meant to be consumed with food. However, we usually drink wines as cocktails, or on their own, without thinking about what we eat to match the wine mood. Sometimes, people also enjoy them as trophies, for the experience of tasting a rare, expensive wine. In these contexts, food doesn’t matter. Wine is the highlight.

The concept of a “food wine” became a derogatory — a wine that didn’t taste good on its own and needed food as a counterbalance for its flaws. That’s not what we mean today by describing a wine as “food-friendly.”

  • Every good wine will be friendly with at least some food. A positively food-friendly wine plays nicely with a broad category of foods, from sweet to savory to spicy, from meat to fish to veggies.

“I’ve had A-plus perfect pairings, where every note in the wine and dish sync and amplify each other, but those are rare experiences, and I don’t think they are the point most of the time,” says Matt Stamp, a master sommelier who used to try to orchestrate such pairings at the French Laundry in Yountville, in Napa Valley.

  • Along with Rosé, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Barbera are wines noted for their acidity and versatility with food. This can result in surprising pairings. Beef braised in Riesling is a traditional German dish, and pinot noir makes an exciting partner to sushi, roast chicken, pork, or grilled salmon. 
  • When in doubt at home or in a restaurant, look for these types of wines for challenging food pairings or find some bubbles, the second characteristic that defines food-friendly wines. Bubbles go with everything. The sparkling wine’s enthusiasm effectively cleanses your mouth and prepares you for the next bite of food or a sip of wine. Sparkling wines also manage to be refreshingly acidic. We do ourselves an offense by relegating champagne and other bubblies drinks, such as Italian prosecco or Spanish cava.

“Champagne can be had throughout a meal, even with the right steak,” says Nadine Brown, former sommelier at Charlie Palmer Steak in D.C. “Fried chicken and potato chips with grower champagne is hot right now,” Brown says, pointing to the ultimate combo of extravagant wine and poor vittles.

I usually don’t agree with the “drink the wine you like with the food you like” school of view because it can be lazy. But if you pay attention to the wines you drink and the foods you pair them with, you’ll develop your group of wine styles to draw on when wondering, “What on earth should I drink with this?”

And as Brown advises, “Stay curious.” You might find something unique and surprising.
