Unless you’ve been completely disconnected from the world for the last, oh, year… then you’ve probably heard about the keto diet. It’s all about cutting carbs, increasing fat intake, and essentially forcing your body to go into a metabolic state, and it’s all the rage! But many experts are warning people of the dangers that come with the latest fad diet. So read through if you’ve already had your doubts about the latest trend.
IT CAN INCREASE YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS
One of the major elements of the keto diet is that a lot of your carbs should come from fat. So for a lot of people, this ends up meaning eating a lot of butter, cheese, and fatty meats. Naturally, this can lead to dangerously high levels of cholesterol. So whether you’ve already started on the keto diet or you’re just thinking about it, be sure to check your cholesterol levels first. It might be a terrible idea for you.
IT CAN ELEVATE YOUR HEART RATE
It’s fairly common for people to experience an elevated heart rate during the first few weeks of the keto diet. And while you may be thinking, “ok, that’s not that big of a deal”… what would you say if I told you this is due to dehydration? And if someone has a history of arrhythmias, the keto diet is especially dangerous as it could increase their chances of an arrhythmic episode.
IT CAN LEAD TO SEVERE DEHYDRATION
The word “keto” itself comes from the word “ketosis,” which is the specific kind of metabolic state the diet forces your body to go into. And when in ketosis, your body produces a significant amount of ketones. If you end up with too many ketones, a condition known as ketoacidosis will occur. Essentially it causes your blood to become too acidic, which in turn leads to dehydration. A little complicated, I know. But it’s a very important factor to be aware of if you’re considering the diet.
IT CAN IMPAIR YOUR VITAL ORGANS
The big danger in cutting out carbs so aggressively is your body is likely to get very little glucose. And glucose is one of the most valuable fuel sources for your red blood cells, nervous system, and brain. So cutting out so many carbs can mean cutting out a lot of glucose which can mean all those vital organs stop working properly.
IN CAN CREATE NEW OR INFLATE CURRENT EATING DISORDERS
Much of the keto diet is restrictive. Don’t eat this, don’t eat that. It literally requires eliminating entire food groups from your diet. So if you have suffered from eating disorders in the past, this is a very dangerous diet option. And even you haven’t suffered from eating disorders, it has the danger of creating new ones for you to suffer from.
In the end, the dangers of this diet comes down to its focus on purely weight loss as opposed to healthier eating and living. So, while it definitely can be an effective choice if you want to lose some weight, it’s far from the healthiest weight loss option and brings with it significant risks.
