5 Things to Keep in Mind if You Want to Write a Children’s Book

Did you know that the children’s book publishing segment in the U.S. is worth $2.6 billion?

Another source adds that the most-read children’s books include The Little Prince; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. You can check out popular children’s books for some insight and inspiration–and to study the competition.

Do you believe you have what it takes to produce a successful children’s book? If you want to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard but aren’t sure how to achieve your dream of writing a children’s book, you’ll want some tips to guide your journey.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind if you want to write a book that the little ones will want to read.

1. Select Your Age Range

One of the first things you’ll need to do is figure out a specific age range. A book that appeals to children from the ages of three to six, for instance, likely won’t appeal to children from the ages of 10 to 13. When considering topics or storylines that appeal to you, you’ll be better able to figure out the proper age range to target.

2. Write the Way Kids Talk

When figuring out the age range you’ll be targeting, you need to write the way kids in that demographic talk. That means doing some research. When you look at what’s already out there in the market, target books from authors targeting a similar demographic. You’ll get a feel for the type of language used, the length of the sentences, the size of the paragraphs, the dialogue, and other things that can make or break your children’s book.

3. Read Your Book Aloud

After you write your book, read it out loud. The ear will sometimes catch things that the eyes may inadvertently overlook. You may find out that some phrases sound awkward when read out loud. Consider word choices, sentence structures, and other things connected to readability. If possible, have someone else edit your finished children’s book. Having a second set of eyes comb over your work can help you improve it immeasurably.

4. Get Kids to Read it

The next step is to get people from your target market to read your children’s book. You’ll want feedback. It’s not enough that they read the book or tell you whether they liked it or not, however. Ask why they liked the book or disliked it, what they especially liked about it, what they didn’t like about it, what they would have added if they could, and other things of this nature. If you have children in your family who you can count on for honest answers, they can be your test market. Encourage them to be honest with their feedback.

5. Find a Publisher

The next step is to find a publisher. If you’re fortunate enough to find an agent who will handle the publisher search, great. But most authors end up having to find a publisher on their own. You can look for a traditional publisher or go the self-publishing route instead.

The latter option is the easiest, but there are a lot of self-publishing companies out there. And one self-publisher isn’t necessarily as good as another. So, you need to do your research and find the right one. If you want to publish a children’s book, ensure you find a publisher with experience in this space.

Publishing a children’s book is a major undertaking. There’s a lot of competition in the space, so you’ll have your work cut out for you. But if you keep these tips in mind, you’ll find it easier to accomplish your dream of publishing a successful children’s book.

How to Find a Long-Lost Friend

How to Find a Long-Lost Friend

Many of us have long lost friends – acquaintances we once spent significant time with, but lost touch with over the years. If you don’t know where your friend is or how to contact them, you may be curious to try and find them.

But how can you do it?

Organize What You Know

First, spend some time organizing what you know about this person. The more information you have, the more thoroughly you’ll be able to search.

  • Current and former names. What is this person’s name? Did they go by any different names in the past? Do you know their middle name or any nicknames they used to go by? Prepare to search for all of these in your future discovery efforts.
  • Last known location. When did you last know this person? Where were they living? Do you know if they moved since the time they last knew you?
  • Job/industry. Where did this person work? Do you know what job they held or what employer they worked for? Do you at least know what industry they’re in?
  • Contacts and associates. Do you share any mutual contacts or associates, such as friends who knew both of you?
  • Photos. Photos of the person can also be helpful to have, especially if you end up hiring a private investigator.
  • Interests and hobbies. Do you know of any particular hobbies or interests this person has that could help you find them?

Use a Simple Online Search

If you haven’t already, try using a simple online search through Google or another popular search engine. Type the person’s name, or variations of the person’s name, and see what comes up. You might hit the jackpot and find them right away.

Use an Advanced Online Directory

Unfortunately, Google makes it hard to find people, especially if they have a common name; there are more than 7 billion people on the planet, after all. That’s why you’re usually better off using a more advanced online directory, where you can search for specific individuals. For example, with Fast People Search, you can enter a full name and a general area to look for your friend. Instantly, you’ll generate a list of addresses, phone numbers, aliases, and even secondary types of information like divorce records. In most cases, you’ll be able to find who you’re looking for, or you’ll at least be able to get more information you can use in your future searching efforts.

Look on Social Media

In our current era of digital connectedness and social media, it’s presumably easy to find anyone in the world – assuming they’re on social media in the first place. But if your friend could be found simply by entering their name in Facebook’s search bar, you probably would have met them by now.

Instead, you’ll need to dig deeper to find a person on social media. That could mean looking for friends of friends, experimenting with different URLs, or looking for a person via their email address.

Reach Out to Shared Contacts

If that doesn’t work, consider reaching out to some shared contacts. Who do you currently know who used to know this individual? Reconnect with them and ask them for any information they can share. Do they know where this person lives? Do they have any contact information for them? Are they aware of any name changes or other personal transformations that could make them difficult to find?

Make Yourself Easier to Find

If you and this person had a good relationship, they may be searching for you as thoroughly as you’re searching for them. If that’s the case, it’s a good idea to make yourself easier to find. Make sure all your social media profiles are public, keep your information up to date, and list any alternative names that were once associated with you as often as possible. You might be surprised at the results.

Hire a Private Investigator

If all else fails, you can consider hiring a private investigator. Private investigators have access to more tools and techniques than amateurs; they can be expensive, but they also tend to get results. If you’re desperate to find your friend, and every other technique has failed you, this could be your only real option.

Preparing for First Contact

It’s a good idea to remain optimistic and assume that eventually, you will find your long lost friend. It’s also important to prepare yourself for first contact. Depending on how you left this relationship, the initial stages of reintroduction could be awkward; be prepared to introduce some levity and explain why you wanted to find them. You should also be prepared for how this person may have changed since you last saw them. Hopefully, you’ll be able to reconnect fluidly and reestablish the powerful bond you once shared.

5 Ideas For Turning Your Home Into a Luxury Escape

The impacts of the lockdowns due to the pandemic have left people feeling nervous, fatigued, and restless. Staying in your home for long periods of time is against human nature.

It’s normal to feel bored, staring at the four walls in your home every day. And while it’s impossible to bring all the elements of a luxury escape into your home, you can create a sense of relaxation and sanctuary.

Here are some ways to give your home the feeling of a luxury resort.

Declutter

To transform your home into a lavish place, you will first need to declutter. And while some people find decluttering difficult, it doesn’t have to be. Start by reorganizing your furniture, arranging your decorations, and getting rid of things that you no longer use.

Additionally, make sure that there is no clutter in the entryway. Remove all the tables, consoles, and desks that might be blocking the way. To keep things organized, consider getting multipurpose storage. Remember to also keep the things that make you joyful and declutter each day to keep your home clean and organized. Besides, decluttering is good for your mental health.

Cultivate relaxation

Luxury resorts have warm and comforting textures and scents. You will need to keep that in mind if you want to create a cozy home for yourself. Fortunately, you won’t have to go far to get what you need – almost everything is within your reach.

Remember that this is dependent on yourself, so, try to deliberate on the feelings that make you relax. Light candles or build a fire pit in your backyard or add an indoor fireplace. You can use this fireplace buyer’s guide to determine the right one for your home.

Build a fountain

When thinking of a fountain, most people picture it outside a business or a luxurious hotel. However, you can build one in your backyard. You too can achieve that bubbling sound with a few stones, a pump, and water.

It is easier to build a fountain and create the needed sound level. Besides, having a fountain can help you get rid of unwanted noise and attract wildlife; all of which play a significant role in creating a relaxing place.

Additionally, the space in your yard will greatly affect the size, style, shape, and color of the fountain. However, regardless of the type of fountain, remember that it will need maintenance to keep it in perfect condition.

Add colorful plants

Almost everyone likes visiting new places for a change of scenery, but why shouldn’t that be the case every day? Why not add some pop of color and fragrance to your backyard? You can easily create the feeling of a fresh place by planting foliage that you don’t have in your garden. However, remember to choose plants that are native to your location.

Dine outside

The pleasant views and aesthetics of most retreat spots make eating outside amazing. However, that feeling is not limited to hotels and restaurants. Get the right spot on your patio and set a dining area and transform your eating experience. Remember that the furniture you pick must be durable to withstand any weather conditions.

Summing Up

Just because you love being at home doesn’t mean that you should spend the entire day gazing at your four walls. Plus, you don’t have to go to a luxury hotel to experience the feeling of relaxation and tranquility. You can bring them all into your home with the above simple ideas.
