The health benefits of exercise are so convincing it’s surprising that we don’t all run every day to work, to school or to “run” errands. Maybe that’s because the reality — what some consider the downside of exercise — kicks in: it seems hard, makes you sweaty, and feels uncomfortable.

A hot environment makes all of those complaints louder. When you exercise in the heat, your body rushes more blood to your skin to aid in the escape of heat — so less blood flows to the muscles and brain, speeding up the onset of fatigue. A new study by a group of researchers was launched to determine if a person could overcome the negative effects by just thinking differently about their sweat session in a hot space.

“If there are changes going on, can we use psychological tools to improve our tolerance to heat and reduce how uncomfortable it makes us?” wondered Stephen Cheung, professor and a Canada Research Chair at Brock University in Ontario, who is an author of the small new study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Could these psychological tools also enhance the abilities of people as exercisers?

Cheung and his colleagues recruited 18 competitive cyclists to participate in an intense exercise session in the heat. Nine of the cyclists continued their usual training for two weeks. The other nine participated in motivational-skills training, a type of self-talk that “reframes” negative feelings — like discomfort in a hot environment — into positive thoughts and feelings. As opposed to thinking “My legs are burning” or “I’m sweating like crazy,” participants were trained to form more positive, empowering thoughts like “I’m doing well” or “I can handle this.”

After two weeks, all study participants reconvened to perform the hot-exercise test again. The first (normal training) group saw no change in their performance. But the experimental group “improved a huge amount,” Cheung says. Members of the psych-group were able to pedal for 25% longer than they were initially, and they could sustain high levels of discomfort for a lot longer than their non-psych-group peers. Their body temperatures were also hotter than those of their peers, suggesting that the brain has a lot of power in determining how far the body is able to push itself.

Athletes are unlikely to be surprised by these research results, because high-level exercisers know that the mind is often the first aspect of the self to get tired. “It’s really ultimately the brain that lets you down,” Cheung says. “You can go a lot harder than a lot of times you think you can.” What is surprising is that the words you tell yourself can make such a difference. “Even in the face of strong physiological cues to stop,” Cheung says, “the brain can still override them.”
