What is the Ketogenic Diet?

You may have heard rumors of people putting butter in their morning coffees, and I’m here to explain why.  It sounds gross and super unhealthy, but hear me out. A ketogenic diet emphasizes low-carbs, high-fat and a good amount of protein and was developed in the 1920’s to help people with epilepsy. The whole idea behind this odd sounding diet is to get your body into ketosis, which is a metabolic state where your body feeds off of stored fat primarily.



Our bodies usually rely on carbohydrates as the first food source it feeds off of. But in ketosis you want your body to feed off of fat that is already stored in your body. This leads to weight loss in many cases. The key here is to eat less carbs so your body can’t convert these into sugars, which causes your body to make insulin to break down the sugar. Instead we want our body to produce ketones, which are released by the liver when our body feeds off of stored fats.

Ketosis is a side effect of fasting and is basically your body feeding off of the fat you have already in it. If you want to burn fat, this is one of the most effective ways. The only caveat is you have to eat a fat heavy diet with only about 5% carbohydrates.




If you want to try a ketosis diet it takes some serious discipline and some creative meal planning. Here are the foods you should base all your meals off of.



Eat plenty of nuts, seeds, butter, avocado, ghee, olive oil, coconut oil, and mayonnaise. These fatty foods will help kick start ketosis in your body and it will be eating itself in no time.



Try and eat some of these high-protein foods. Fish, chicken, turkey, ham, pork, bacon, steak, veal, goat, eggs, peanut butter, full-dairy products. It sounds similar to the Paleo diet but with much more fats.


Low-carb veggies

You have to supplement your meals with low-fat veggies. So eat plenty of asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, cucumber, celery, mushrooms, peppers, pickles, lettuce, peas, tomatoes and some winter squashes.


Body on a ketogenic diet

Starting a ketogenic diet is the hardest because your body has to normalize the huge change in diet. Your body is basically switching its favorite food source so expect some challenges. Many people need to take some multi-vitamins to supplement the nutrients they are missing out on.


Weight loss?

Yes but there are some concerns.

On a ketogenic diet you will most likely lose a good amount of weight off the jump, but is that the diet or lack of carbs? The body holds onto water when it breaks down carbs, so the body releases water when you don’t eat carbs. Is the weight you lose all water weight? Some say it is, but others truly believe they can lose a large amount of weight on this type of diet.


The problem with this type of diet is that once you stop eating ketogenic, you gain the weight back almost immediately. This type of diet is very hard to maintain for long periods of time.

If anything the ketogenic diet should teach you how carbohydrates make you gain weight.
