Showers. We take them every day. Well… we take them most days. Heck, some people take more than one every day! Regardless of how many you take, they’re an important part of staying healthy and not bothering your coworkers and friends.
But you may be surprised to learn that not all showers are taken equally. In fact, some people take cold showers. I know, I know. It’s so scary you don’t even want to think about it. But cold showers have more benefits than you may realize. So let’s go through both options and talk about the benefits of both.
These are the kinds of showers we all know and love. They can wake you up, relieve some tension, and make you feel as clean as possible. And who doesn’t like being clean! But let’s take a closer look at why hot showers are great.
-Firstly, as previously mentioned, they can do wonders for tension and sore muscles. This is especially true if you have a shower with great pressure! The stronger the pressure, the better relief you’ll get for those tired old muscles of yours. You can even go all out and get yourself a massaging shower head with all those fancy different functions.
-There have also been multiple studies that showed taking a hot shower can increase your levels of oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone that is often referred to as the “love hormone” as it is increased when we hug or kiss someone. So, basically, a nice hot shower has the same effect that kissing someone you love does! I mean, what else do you need?
Similarly, it can help relieve anxiety. I don’t know about you, but I get anxious just about every day. And I happily welcome any and all methods of relieving it. It’s really starting to make sense why I love that hot shower first thing in the morning.
-Lastly, a hot shower can help relieve congestion and various cold symptoms. The steam from the hot water literally moisturizes the nasal passage. That’s why, when you have a cold, you rarely feel as good as you do right after a shower. Heck, I might take 3 or 4 showers a day the next time I get a cold!
Now, I know this is hard to believe, but as I stated at the beginning of the article, cold showers have a lot of benefits too! For example, simply turning your hot shower into a cold shower for the last few minutes can literally “shock” your body and help wake you up first thing in the morning. More specifically, it helps increase your mental awareness and relieve your body of any fatigue it may still be feeling.
-Cold showers have also been proven to help with depression. Research has shown that a couple of short, cold showers every day can improve your mood and fight depression. But, if you’re considering trying this one out, be sure to check with your doctor first and make sure it’s right for you.
-And, here’s where it gets good, cold showers are actually great for your hair and skin! I mean, let’s not kid ourselves, we’re all a little vain. We all want to look good! And cold showers are much better than hot ones when it comes to hydrating your body and fighting dry skin and split ends.
