Just because you are on vacation, doesn’t mean you have to eat like a maniac… Summer is the time we like to cut loose and enjoy ourselves but that shouldn’t mean we throw away all our healthy eating habits. It’s been shown that children tend to gain three times as much weight during the summer and much of that is because of our relaxed summertime diets. Missing out on the balanced and structured school meals means way more junk food.   You can still have fun AND eat healthily, so let’s see what summer food is good and which ones are just too bad.

 

Good: Watermelon

How can watermelon be anything but good when it’s made of 90% water? There aren’t many better ways to rehydrate yourself in the hot summertime while also replenishing much-needed nutrients. Watermelon is also only 44 calories per cup, that’s pretty sweet.

 

Bad: Ice Cream Sandwich

There are way healthier options to snack on during the sweltering summer months. Ice cream sandwiches are two cookies with a scoop of ice cream smashed in between, which is as terrible for you as it sounds. These are usually around 500 calories, which is an insane amount for a snack.

 

Good: Corn on the Cob

When you are looking for a great side item to go along with your BBQ dinner, look no further than that familiar corn on the cob. Serve without butter and salt and you have yourself a high fiber/low-calorie side.

 

Bad: Macaroni or Potato Salad

Picnics and BBQs are nothing without some nice Mac salad or potato salad, but these summertime side items are calorie bombs we should all avoid. A small portion is usually around 300 calories, that’s way too much for a side.

 

Good: Fruit Salad

What could be bad about a bowl full of seasonal fruits, all diced up into perfect bite sized pieces? Nothing, this is the perfect summertime snack and should actually be eaten as much as possible.

 

Bad: Corn Dogs

Corn dogs just remind me of the summertime and going to the county fair, which almost never has any healthy options. Hot dogs, in general, are bad for you and filled with chemicals and sodium. Avoid these gut bombs and you should keep the extra pounds away.

 

Good: Fresh Iced Tea

Iced tea alone has zero calories, tons of antioxidants and has been shown to help with weight loss. What’s not to love? It’s not just refreshing but it’s very beneficial, all in all, a great summer beverage.

  

Bad: Ribs

Eating anything at a barbecue joint is a risky situation with your diet. Ribs are tasty but full of saturated fats and added calories. Skipping out on ribs will save you around 300 calories and it will be more if there is tons of BBQ sauce.

  

Good: Zucchini

The wonder veggie of the summer is definitely the Zucchini. Try it grilled, raw, sliced or diced, these magical veggies are perfect summer fare. Only 20 calories a cup and always refreshing, they should always be on your menu.

 

Bad: Daiquiris

What is a pool party without a frozen daiquiri? A terrible idea is what it is, these delicious drinks are awesome but too many will add inches to your waistline. Daiquiris pack as many calories as a double cheeseburger, so remember that when ordering a second drink…
