I don’t know about you, but hate when people lie. Just man up and tell the truth already! Lying won’t make anything easier. The truth will eventually come out and you will just look worse. So just tell the truth already!
But, just in case, here are 8 simple ways you can tell if someone is lying to you.
THEY TRY TO DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM YOU
This makes perfect sense. If someone is lying to you, they’re going to try to get away from you as fast as possible. But take notice, this could be as simple as leaning back in their chair or crossing their legs. This also applies to crossing their arms. A dead giveaway that someone is withdrawing from you.
When you get stressed, your “limbic system” is activated and your instinct is to release some of that energy. This is your body attempting to help you stay calm. And wouldn’t you know it, lying is stressful enough for many that it activates the limbic system. Playing with your hair and rubbing your neck are the two most common versions of this, but any other rubbing, picking, scratching, etc. apply.
THEY’RE NOT MAKING EYE CONTACT
This is specific to the moment they tell the lie. Eye contact is a very intimate exchange. So if someone is carrying the guilt of lying to you, they aren’t going to want to look at you. This is like liar-hunting 101, people. You should already know this!
THEY’RE ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS WITH MORE QUESTIONS
This is a classic diversion tactic. If they keep changing the subject and making you answer questions, then they’ll never have to lie when they actually answer yours. More often than not, if someone is telling the truth, they’ll answer with a simple yes or no. But if a liar is trying to get out of even having to lie, chances are they’re going to ask you a lot of questions too.
THEY’RE RAMBLING AND SHIFTING THE BLAME
Over-explaining and trying to push the blame on you or someone else is a tell-tale sign that someone is lying. Again, the liar is going to try as hard as they can to get away with the lie. So they’ll come up with whatever they can and try to make the accuser feel guilty. Don’t fall for it. They’re lying!
THEIR STORY KEEPS CHANGING
If a liar has to keep telling their lie multiple times, chances are some of the details will change. That’s because most of them are made up! So next time you think someone is lying to you, just keep asking them to repeat their story. If they’re telling the truth, telling it the same way should be easy!
THEIR STORY JUST FLAT OUT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE
Some liars are just plain bad liars! So it’s not uncommon for someone to make up a story that just doesn’t make sense. There’s a famous saying around this one that goes, “If it doesn’t add up… it’s usually because the truth wasn’t in the equation.”
THEY’RE EXHIBITING FIGHT OR FLIGHT SYMPTOMS
These are the dead giveaways that we’re all familiar with. Licking your lips, a flushed face, shallow breath, and, of course, sweat! Sweating is a proper giveaway that someone is straight up lying. This is due to your digestive system literally stopping when fight-or-flight kicks in.
