You don’t want to ruin your workout by immediately slamming a greasy slice of pizza on the ride home. That totally defeats the purpose of busting your ass at the gym in the first place. However, many people don’t know that after you workout it is extremely important to feed your body so that it can begin the process of repairing muscle tissues and replenishing the glycogen stores. If you don’t do that you’re more likely to feel sore and your muscles will break down instead of growing. So eating after a workout is important, but you have to be smart about what you eat.
Here are some great post-workout snacks that will help replenish your energy without replenishing your waistline.
PROTEIN SHAKE WITH BANANA
Get some whey protein in your body with some banana to help replenish your energy and replenish it fast. You can suck down a sweet smoothie quickly and since it is little for your body to break down you will be up and running again in no time. Don’t add ice cream or sprinkles to your smoothie, keep it reasonable. Try just two scoops of whey protein, half a banana, and water for a nice balanced snack that will make you a lean mean banana eating machine.
PEANUT BUTTER & BANANA ON RICE CAKES
Make yourself a delectable sandwich after your workout to help build back your muscles and restore your energy. Instead of slamming a bunch of bread though, why not try smearing the nut butter on brown rice cakes to give your body some nice fiber without those empty carbs. The bananas will replenish your energy and the sandwich is remarkably tasty thanks to its awesome texture. This beats out a lot of other snacks when it comes to deliciousness.
HUMMUS AND PITA
Take your post-workout meal to the middle east with some delectable hummus and pita. Hummus is a great mix of protein and carbohydrates that will help rebuild muscle and refuel immediately. A whole wheat pita, on the other hand, is a slow release carbohydrate since it takes your body longer to break down. This will help keep your body energized and your stomach feeling full for hours on end which makes it a no-brainer when it comes to one of your go-to healthy post-workout snacks.
YOGURT AND FRESH BERRIES
If you’re looking to indulge your sweet tooth a little bit then look no further than yogurt and fresh berries. The yogurt brings the protein and the berries bring the carbs making this snack idea for you and your friends after you’re done hitting the weights hard. This is a great way to feel like you’re indulging in something naughty when you’re really just taking care of your body. Now that’s what I call a win-win.
TUNA ON WHOLE WHEAT
A tuna sandwich seems too good to be true as a healthy post-workout snack but it’s true. Just make sure you make yourself some healthy tuna with things like lemon juice and olive oil, don’t use mayo and bacon. Make yourself a half sandwich and prepare fully recover so you can hit the gym hard again tomorrow.
