If your doctor told you to move up your wedding date because you might not even make it to the one that is currently scheduled… would you do it? Well, that’s exactly the situation that Laurin Long and her fiance Michael Bank found themselves in earlier this year. But what’s a love story without the story! Let’s start at the beginning.
While this isn’t the first story any of us have ever heard about a couple surviving a cancer scare, this one is especially unique as Laurin and Michael actually first met when Laurin was already in the middle of her fight against cancer. That really speaks to the power of love now, doesn’t it? Even while one person is in the fight of their life, love still finds a way. And these two most certainly fell in love.
So in June of 2017, when Laurin was cancer free and Michael asked if she wanted to “keep this party going”… Laurin was overjoyed to say yes. Despite the obstacles they faced at the get-go in their relationship, they were about to spend the rest of their lives together and they couldn’t be happier about it. They started planning the wedding, set their date, and sent out those save-the-dates. But then, the unthinkable happened.
Laurin started to have some back pain. It didn’t seem too bad, but she figured she should have it checked out. When she met with her doctor, she got the terrible and shocking news: her cancer was back. She couldn’t believe it. After everything she had been through, she was going to have to do it all over again. And with her wedding just months away no less.
But the scary news didn’t stop there. After three months of treatment, the cancer was actually spreading. It had even reached her lungs and doctors feared the worst. They were forced to have a difficult conversation with Laurin and Michael where they advised them that it might be worth it to move up their wedding date. Because if they kept it as it was scheduled… Laurin might not make it.
But Laurin was having none of it. She made a promise to Michael that she was going to keep the party going. And that’s exactly what she was going to do. They kept the date right where it was, Laurin kept fighting and doing her treatments, and they got lots of help from family and friends with the wedding.
Sure enough, by March, the month they were set to be married, Laurin got the amazing news that her body was accepting the treatment. She was getting better! It was the best wedding gift she could have asked for. Her wedding went off without a hitch. In fact, Laurin describes it as the best day of her life.
This beautiful story just goes to show you; sometimes it pays to ignore your doctor’s advice! Congrats to the happy couple and here’s to a lifetime of health and love together.
