Eat your carrots, they’re good for your eyes!

Parents have told this to their kids for years and years. It always worked for me, because I wanted to have super powers. I was convinced if I ate all my carrots that pretty soon I would have laser vision, x-ray vision and every other type of vision Superman has. Well, that never worked out, all that happened was I got very sick of carrots after a while.

But there is good news for me and for you, carrots aren’t the only food that helps your vision. Carrots and other orange fruits and vegetables contain Beta-carotene which is great for your retina and other parts of your eye, but Beta-carotene isn’t the only vitamin that is connected to eye health. There are plenty of other vitamins and minerals that are necessary for your eyes that can be found in these common foods.

 

Leafy Greens

Wow, I mean, what can’t leafy greens do? It is true, lettuce and kale and other green leafed vegetables contain lutein and zeaxanthin which lower the risk of cataracts as well as macular degeneration. So, order another salad, because those leafy greens will help your eyes function for another day, and throw some carrots in there too, because why not.

 

Eggs

That’s right, delicious eggs aren’t just a great source of protein, but they also help your eyes too. They make your body stronger and your eyes stronger as well. This is because the yolk contains lutein and zeaxanthin just like the leafy greens but eggs take it a step further by containing zinc as well. All these vitamins and minerals together pack one powerful healthy eye punch that can help you kiss macular degeneration goodbye. So scramble some eggs so your eyes don’t get scrambled.

 

Citrus and Berries

These fruits have the highest concentration of vitamin C which is great at helping those eyes. Vitamin C is great for many things and now you can add helping your eyes to the long list because it is shown to once-again help reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.

 

Fatty Fish

DHA is a fatty acid that is found in your retina which is also found packed into fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel, and anchovies. If you want to avoid dry eyes then eating these fatty fish is great for you. Think of these fish as nature’s Visine as they will keep your eyes nice and gooey, just the way you want. Just make sure you eat the fish, don’t shove it in your eyes.

 

Almonds

Almonds help slow down macular degeneration as well because they are packed to the gills with vitamin E. If you eat two handfuls of almonds a day, which is easy since almonds are delicious, you will get your daily dose of vitamin E and your eyes will love you so much they’ll want to kiss you.
